All applicants must meet the following minimum requirements established by the City of South Beloit, Illinois. Applicant must be Illinois Law Enforcement Certified or meet the out of state trained reciprocity requirements. Must have served full time for at least two (2) years with their current Law Enforcement Department or Agency REQUIRED DOCUMENT INSTRUCTIONS Download the application. This collaboration underscores the City’s commitment to delivering highly trained firefighter/paramedics equipped to handle a wide range of emergencies, while also demonstrating our region’s strong cooperative spirit. Fire Chief Brian Kunce was sworn in on March 2, 2026, during the City Council meeting. On March 4, 2026, all new personnel began their mandatory training. Each member brings prior experience in the fire service. South Beloit took over ambulance responses on March 11th, 2026. Training included EMS system testing, ambulance equipment familiarization, review of Standing Medical Orders, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) training, apparatus driving and engineering instruction, hose deployment operations, first-arriving company drills, and more. On April 1, 2026, the South Beloit Fire Department will assume full operational responsibility of fire responses from the Town of Beloit, which had previously been contracted by the City to provide EMS coverage. All members of the new South Beloit Fire Department team are eager and excited to serve and protect the citizens of South Beloit. Advancements in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Recent enhancements in EMS operations demonstrate a focus on improving patient outcomes and ensuring responder readiness. Advanced Intubation Equipment: Modern tools to enhance airway management during critical emergencies. Protocol Updates: Expanded guidelines allowing advanced airway management capabilities. Enhanced Medication Security: New systems for securely storing and protecting medications on ambulances. Community and Coverage The SBFD serves a diverse community spanning approximately 6.5 square miles with a population of 8,000. The area includes a mix of residential neighborhoods, commercial establishments, and industrial facilities. Sonya was born and raised in South Beloit and is a 1999 South Beloit High School graduate. Sonya served on the South Beloit Park & Recreation Advisory Board, Vice Chaired the South Beloit Centennial Committee and served two partial terms on the South Beloit City Council. Sonya earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Western Illinois University in Recreation, Parks & Tourism Administration. Sonya also brings 11 years of professional, municipal experience from the City of Beloit, Wisconsin and the City of Wildwood, Florida. Sonya is passionate about the potential for South Beloit to continue the path of continuous improvement, professionalism and stability.     NEWS & INFORMATION State awards South Beloit $600K for neighborhood park at Nature At The Confluence SOUTH BELOIT, Illinois (February 2, 2026) – The City of South Beloit will move forward with a long-awaited neighborhood park at Nature at the Confluence after securing a $600,000 grant through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources’ Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) Program. Our location between Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River places us in the heart of the Midwest's largest market. The area's diverse transportation systems offer quick access to these markets, with Interstate Highways 39, 90, and 43 connecting us to other Wisconsin and Illinois communities as well as the rest of the nation. Natural History South Beloit was rich in natural resources, including copper, lead, and bog iron. Winnebago County had abundant buff and blue limestone along the Rock River and Turtle Creek. Early settlers used buff limestone for houses and public buildings still visible in Rockford, Rockton, Beloit, and South Beloit. The area also featured fine sand deposits and high- quality clay that was attractive to industries. Earliest Residents Many Peoples have inhabited South Beloit over the years, including the Mound Builders, Sioux, and Illinswek (Illinois). Around 1830, a large Ho-Chunk village known as Ke-Chunk (Turtle Village) existed near the mouth of Turtle Creek close to the Illinois-Wisconsin state line in what is now Beloit, Wisconsin or South Beloit, Illinois.
